Abstract

This paper explores the critical role of geotechnical engineering in the design and construction of tunnels in challenging terrains, focusing on the complexities introduced by variable geological conditions, groundwater issues, and seismic activity. The study begins with a comprehensive review of traditional tunnel construction methods and their limitations when applied to difficult terrains, such as mountainous regions, soft soils, and urban environments. It then discusses innovative techniques and technologies, including advanced ground characterization, real-time monitoring systems, and the use of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) designed for specific geological challenges. Case studies from various global projects illustrate the successful application of these methods, highlighting lessons learned and best practices. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating geotechnical engineering principles early in the planning stages to mitigate risks, enhance safety, and optimize project outcomes. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and development in geotechnical methodologies, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach to address the evolving challenges in tunnel construction within complex geological settings.
